If a picture is worth a thousand words...then just imagine the story you can tell with video.

Video has taken over the marketing game. It is powerful, emotive and direct. Not only does video allow you to market your services and products, it enables you to create an instant connection with a prospective client. With technology growing at such a rapid speed, it’s impossible to stay current without participating in new trends that steer away from “old-school marketing”. That’s where we come in!

We understand the need to set yourself apart, to try things a little differently. Video has so many elements, it’s part of why we love doing it so much! The right equipment, the right location, the right people, the right song, the right weather…it’s a continuously moving puzzle that starts to take on it’s own shape from the second you hit record. But to start it all off, you need an objective and a concept.

The Back Story

Accru Harris Orchard is an accounting firm that has been in business for 50 years. In that time, they’ve learned a lot about what their clients want. They have started to expand beyond the role of traditional accountants solely focusing on cashflow, and into the role of business advisors, helping their clients make their business “great”. Accru didn’t want to make a video focusing on their own business, but rather explore what a “great business” means to their clients. We knew this would give us the opportunity to meet several different hard working Australians over a variety of locations. After our meeting, we began to brain storm and wrestle with some concepts.

The Drawing Board

After meeting with Accru and learning their core focus is to understand what “great” means to their clients, we decided to try and make the video feel conversational. Since corporate videos can often times feel a bit tired, we wanted to include a dynamic element and focus on movement to keep the energy up. The perfect solution to incorporate these ideas into our video was the steady cam. This would enable us to walk and talk with James from Accru and capture that conversational feel. We could also follow Accru’s clients, showcasing more of their workplace and giving up a glimpse into their daily life.

“Video shoots usually encourage creativity to go a step further and evolve into something even better than you anticipated, but we think preparedness and creative freedom can work beautifully simultaneously.”

Practice Makes Perfect

Once we had our ideas in place and had created our storyboard, it was time to put them to the test. So where we went…so did the steady cam. Walking to grab a coffee in the morning turned into a recce. Doing as much trial and error before the actual shoot gives both ourselves and the client a solidified sense of direction. Unlike other digital areas that allow for a lot of back and forth, video is usually allotted a certain amount of time. This really encourages us to always strive to be 100% prepared with both our creative approach and our gear. Like anything, shoots usually encourage creativity to go a step further and evolve into something even better than you anticipated, but we think preparedness and creative freedom can work beautifully simultaneously.

And Action!

In total, we interviewed five of Accru’s clients that varied greatly in occupation. We started on site of the new Adelaide Festival Centre with Badge Construction and over the following weeks filmed people in the oil industry, workers at the Clare Quarry, wine makers, mushroom farmers, and of course James from Accru. Once we had all the footage we were able to start piecing sequences together. Using Accru’s client interviews along with Jame’s explanation of Acrru’s goals, we were able to explore what a great business looks like to different people and how Accru helps their clients get there.

Bringing It All Together

Once we have all our footage, we sit down and get organised. Firstly, we get all the usable footage and scrap the rest. Then we start playing around with sequencing. Our goal is to keep the visual element dynamic while also telling a cohesive story.
